THE AEGADIAN ISLANDS OWN THE 10TH PLACEMENT
And guess what? Sicily owns the 10th place in this worldwide relevant chart that brings together the very best travel destinations around the globe and includes countries such as France, Philippines and Ireland.
According to the magazine, the Aegadian Islands have earned the 10th place in their chart. Off the Sicilian occidental coast and easy to reach by hydrofoil, the Aegadian archipelago is composed by the islands of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo and also includes a number of small rocky islands. These islands represent the largest protected marine area of Europe and their seabed hosts extended stretches of Posidonia, a seaweed creating a perfect habitat for several species of fish and also for Caretta Caretta sea turtles.
Here, the golden sand, the crystal-clear waters and the untouched nature, infuse a sense of peace that is really difficult to find elsewhere. Favignana is the largest of the islands and you can hop on a bike to explore it turning your travel into a wonderful adventure! When visiting the island, it is necessary to pay a visit to the famous and ancient tonnara, Ex Stabilimento Florio. This establishment is a tuna fishery and it is a symbol of the Sicilian economic development. Extending for 32000 m2, it is among the biggest tuna fisheries in the Mediterranean.
Levanzo is the smallest island of the archipelago but it is the richest from an archeological point of view. Among the several grottos that you can find along the coast there is the “Grotta del Genovese” on which cave walls can be found engravings and paintings dating back to the Upper Paleolithic (9680 b.C.). Furthermore, on the Eastern side of the island, you can find one of the most important submerged archeological sites of Sicily: the relic of a Roman boat, amphorae and fragments of ancient crockery. This is the best spot for divers!
According to the Odyssey’s theory of Trapani (thanks to Samuel Butler), Marettimo, should coincide with Itaca, the ancient home of Ulysses.
On this island there are many things to do.
Marettimo is the wildest, greenest and most mountainous island of the archipelago and it offers several naturalistic itineraries.
