The Alfeo Promenade<\/a> is a wonderful place in which to stroll and enjoy <\/strong>the beautiful crystal clear sea <\/strong>of Syracuse. It consists of a pedestrian avenue<\/strong> overlooked by hotels, bars, restaurants and pizzerias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skirting the Promenade, one arrives at Piazza Federico Svevia<\/a>, where there is the entrance to Castello Maniace<\/a>, one of the most important monuments<\/strong> of the Swabian period in Syracuse and one of the most beautiful of the Frederician castles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fountain of Arethusa<\/a> has been a symbol of the city <\/strong>since its founding by the Hellenes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arethusa<\/strong> was a nymph in the retinue of Artemis, who, in order to escape<\/strong> the court of the god Alphaeus<\/strong>, was transformed by the latter into a freshwater spring<\/strong> that gushes out along the bank washed by the waters of Syracuse’s<\/strong> grand harbor in the southwestern part of the island of Ortigia<\/strong>. The appearance that the spring has today is the result of changes made during the 1800s<\/strong>, such as the walls<\/strong> around it topped with small railings<\/strong>, papyruses<\/strong>, fish<\/strong> and ducks<\/strong>, and is a place for gathering <\/strong>and strolling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Near the Fountain is Piazza San Rocco<\/a>, a splendid location in the heart of the historic center<\/strong> and the scene of Syracuse’s movida<\/strong> with its numerous clubs and pubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaving the fountain behind through Pompeo Picherali Street<\/strong>, you arrive in Piazza Duomo.<\/a> It is one of the most beautiful squares<\/strong> in Italy and is home to numerous baroque-style buildings<\/strong>, bars and clubs, but above all the Duomo. The city’s cathedral<\/strong>, it stands on the upper part of the island of Ortigia, a site destined from ancient times to house a place of worship<\/strong>. The present facade is one of the best Baroque testimonies of Syracuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the square, beyond the cathedral<\/strong>, you can admire the Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia<\/a>, which houses a painting by Caravaggio<\/strong>, the Palazzo Vermexio<\/a>, the Archbishopric<\/strong> and the Palazzo Borgia del Casale<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another stop on our itinerary is Piazza Archimede<\/a>. To reach the square, we pass through Via Roma<\/strong>, a beautiful street full of little stores and goodies for niche shopping<\/strong>. Archimedes Square hosts at its center the Fountain of Diana<\/strong>, which tells the legend of Arethusa<\/strong>, depicted fleeing from Alphaeus and protected by Diana. Palaces that sum up the entire history of the island<\/strong> overlook the square<\/strong>: Palazzo del Banco di Sicilia<\/a>, Palazzo Gargallo<\/a>, Palazzo Lanza<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pupillo Palace<\/a> houses inside the Arkimedeion Museum<\/strong>, a science and technology museum<\/strong> dedicated to Archimedes<\/strong>. The museum displays the inventions<\/strong> and discoveries<\/strong> of the well-known Greek mathematician<\/strong> and physicist<\/strong> who lived in Syracuse between 287 and 212 B.C.<\/strong>, which are illustrated interactively<\/strong> through 24 original exihibits. Inside it houses, in addition to educational workshops<\/strong>, a 3-D cinema<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continue on to Corso matteotti<\/strong>, a shopping street, to arrive at the Temple of Apollo<\/a>. The Temple of Apollo <\/strong>is one of the most important monuments of Ortigia<\/strong> and the oldest Doric temple<\/strong> in the whole of Sicily. The temple has undergone various transformations<\/strong> and adaptations over the centuries: it was, first, a Christian church<\/strong> in Byzantine times<\/strong>, an Arab mosque<\/strong>, a Norman basilica<\/strong> and in the 16th century Spanish barracks<\/strong>. All these transformations, severely damaged the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 1860<\/strong> the temple was discovered<\/strong> inside the barracks and was later unearthed through excavations<\/strong> by Paolo Orsi<\/strong>. Today only two columns<\/strong> remain<\/strong> to testify to the monumentality of the ancient construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
