Some claim that it derives from the <em>Latin Tres castaneae<\/em>, the name of the site where three large chestnut trees were found. Others instead, from <em>Tres Casti Agni<\/em>, or &#8220;the three chaste lambs&#8221;, with reference to the holy martyrs<strong> Alfio, Cirino and Filadelfo, <\/strong>co-patrons of the town, who stopped there during their transfer from <strong>Vaste to Lentini, <\/strong>place of martyrdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trecastagni <\/strong>is one of the piedmont municipalities located at approximately 585 m above sea level and surrounded by various extinct volcanic cones of different ages and sizes such as: <em>Monte Illice, Monte Gorna and Monte Serra.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given its steep slope you can enjoy a <strong>fantastic panorama <\/strong>that goes from Calabria to Augusta.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sicilying.com\/it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/DSCF3154.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sicilying.com\/it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/DSCF3154-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"paesi dell'etna\" class=\"wp-image-2027\" style=\"width:169px;height:225px\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>If you are in <strong>Trecastagni<\/strong>, we recommend you visit the ancient <strong>Sanctuary of the Holy Martyrs Alfio, Cirino and Filadelfo <\/strong>dating back to 1662. Today it is a<strong> historical pilgrimage destination <\/strong>for faithful who come there from the city of Catania, and from neighboring towns <strong>during the month of May<\/strong>, the month in which the Holy Relics were found at the Monastery of San Filippo di Fragal\u00e0 (ME).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the premises of the <strong>Sanctuary<\/strong>, it is possible to visit the <strong>collection of ex votos<\/strong>, that is, an offering made to the Madonna or to the Three Saints in this case<strong>, as a sign of gratitude for a grace received<\/strong>.
