Ivano Mistretta<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Together with the mines of <strong>Racalmuto and Raffo<\/strong>, a hamlet of Petralia Soprana, this mine is one of the very few rock salt mines <strong>still active in Sicily.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is a deposit<\/strong> formed approximately <strong>100 million years ago<\/strong>, from which enormous quantities of <strong>table salt, industrial salt<\/strong> and other salts are extracted every day, 500 metres below the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><strong>The Salt Cathedral: the construction and the interiors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sicilying.com\/it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Cattedrale-del-sale-Ivano-Mistretta-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"cosa vedere ad agrigento: la cattedrale di sale\" class=\"wp-image-2122\" style=\"width:512px;height:342px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ph. Ivano Mistretta<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This<strong> incredible place <\/strong>of worship, <strong>unique in the world<\/strong>, was created in 2000 by miners who, by sculpting the salt rock, managed to create a real cathedral with white and grey shades, 20 metres wide and 8 metres high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year <strong>on December 4th<\/strong>, a <strong>solemn mass<\/strong> is celebrated here by the bishop in honor of <strong>Saint Barbara<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>protector of miners<\/strong> &#8211; reserved only for miners and their families. In fact, there is a niche dedicated to the Saint, where every day the miners, before starting work, dedicate 5 minutes to pray before starting to work.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sicilying.com\/it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Cattedrale-del-sale-Ivano-Mistretta-6-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"cosa vedere ad agrigento: gli interni della cattedrale\" class=\"wp-image-2124\" style=\"width:512px;height:342px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ph. Ivano Mistretta<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>It is thanks to the <strong>local artist Lillo Alba <\/strong>that today we find the sculpture of Saint Barbara, two <strong>holy water fonts<\/strong> made from large blocks of salt at the entrance, as well as a <strong>bishop&#8217;s chair<\/strong>, the table where the lamb was sculpted and <strong>the pulpit <\/strong>where a cross and the Easter candle, the <strong>Crucifix<\/strong>, the<strong> Holy Family<\/strong>, the seat and the altar entirely made of salt are depicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><strong>The Rosone 75 meters underground<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"950\" height=\"633\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sicilying.com\/it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/121743685-8c970855-dc9f-4dc2-82cb-3297ae5733ab.jpg\" alt=\"Il rosone di sale\" class=\"wp-image-2126\" style=\"width:475px;height:317px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ph. Fabrizio Giraldi<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The mine holds another truly suggestive treasure 75 meters underground, namely <strong>the Rosone of salt<\/strong>, and it&#8217;s the result of the &#8220;Mediterranean Sea trapped&#8221; for 6 million years, due to the closure of the <strong>Strait of Gibraltar<\/strong> and the lack of fresh water supplies from the <strong>ocean<\/strong>.<br>This has created over time <strong>a strong concentration of NaCl debri<\/strong>s, namely rock salt with other salts. This explains the presence of concentric circles.
