and the Santoni rock complex in ancient Akrai a stone’s throw from Syracuse
Today we talk about the ancient rock sanctuary of the “Santoni” in Palazzolo Acreide, in the province of Syracuse.
An archaeological site that we can define as UNICUM in Sicily, similar only to the sites of Anatolia and where once the pagan cult of the goddess Cybele “the great mother of the gods” was celebrated, dating back to the Hellenistic period 4th-3rd century BC, a figure close to the Greek goddess Ceres.
Who was the goddess Cybele and what did she represent?
The archaeological complex extends over the Orbo hill with 12 niches dug into the rock, of which only 10 depict the goddess Cybele seated on a throne with the “modio” on her head, while the other 2 depict: Hermes, Attis, the Dioscuri, Hecate, the Gauls and the Corybantes.
The Santoni site is currently closed to the public for renovation, and is on the “Luoghi del cuore FAI” list. Only on rare occasions and organized events is the site opened and updates are communicated by the archaeological park every month, read more on (external link).
We recommend that you book an authorized tour guide in advance to learn about the history of the pagan cults dedicated to the goddess Cybele, visit the archaeological area of Akrai, and why not, even today’s Palazzolo Acreide which is very worth it!
